Content-ON: getting a UX content team to talk words

An online workshop series I initiated to unify how our UX content team writes – starting with voice.

My roleInitiator, driver, content strategist, workshop designer, facilitator and analyst
TeamUX content team across Poland, the US and Singapore
MethodDesign Thinking, online, with asynchronous preparation

Problem

Writing across the UX content team wasn’t consistent enough, and the team didn’t spend enough time together “talking words”.

What I did

1. Let the team choose the topic. I collected topic ideas, the team dot-voted, and I picked the three most popular. The first one was voice.

2. Prepare asynchronously. After setting a goal and outcomes, we started on the topic in a series of exercises: mad-libs ideation, dot voting, comparing and contrasting, and “this, but not that” definitions.

3. Design the workshop around the results. I built the session on what the asynchronous work produced, mapped it out with help from Design Thinking experts, and brought in a designer to make the boards look professional.

4. Run it and learn. I sent out the agenda, ran the workshop and collected feedback.

The work

Content-ON workshop boards: synonyms and antonyms, voice persona, moodboards, rewritten definitions
Workshop boards: from synonyms and moodboards to rewritten definitions

Result

  • An updated UX writing style guide.
  • More awareness in the team of how cultural and language differences change the way we understand certain terms.

What I’d do differently

I’d ask for help more often.

“The Content-On workshop series that she brought to fruition was both a great learning experience as well as a very timely and impactful way for the UX Content team to come together and align beyond words to shape the way we communicate with our users.”
